Lots of negativity going around about 2020 and it is easy to see why: COVID 19, the Derecho and we still need to survive the election. Are you wanting to fast forward to 2021? Are you wanting to go to sleep and wake up in 2021? Will 2021 be better? Only God knows. But haven’t people had it worse? What about the Great Depression or World War 1 & 2? Just think about the persecution the church was going through when the book of Hebrews was written! Here in America we don’t have a clue what that was like. The book of Hebrews was written to give them a faith boost and to encourage them to keep their eyes on Jesus (Hebrews 11 & 12:1-2).
What helps are these words from Hebrews 10:19-25. “Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith… (10:22.)” Are you drawing closer to God? “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess for he who promised is faithful (10:23).” Never give up hope because God is always faithful. He keeps His promises. “Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds (10:24).” Who will you encourage today? How will you encourage them? How can you tangibly express your love to them? “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching (10:25)?” What excuse or reason are you giving for not meeting with other believers? How long will you stay away? What will it take to get you to come back to be with other believers? The fact is: we need each other and we need the Lord. Isolation is not good and even at the worst of times it should be temporary. God’s word to persecuted Christians who feared for their very lives was: “LET US NOT GIVE UP MEETING TOGETHER!”
