November is when we emphasize stewardship at Westover, never forgetting those words of Jesus that it is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35) and “God loves a cheerful giver (2 Cor. 9:7).” Why do you give? Our motive for giving should be to please the Lord. We are here to please Jesus and to bring Him honor and glory. Like the song says, “In my life, Lord, be glorified.” How is God glorified in your life? How is God glorified in your marriage, your family, your job, your community, your school, and in our church? “By this will everyone know that you are my disciples if you have love for one another (John 13:35).” This agape love is an act of the will in which we in practical ways demonstrate that we belong to God by showing love. Can our giving demonstrate love? Absolutely!
One of the ways we demonstrate love in stewardship is by helping those in need (think of Jesus words about ministering to the “least of these”). Thanksgiving and Christmas are a great time to do that. I praise God for that opportunity through Operation Christmas Child. The key in giving and all of life is to listen to the Holy Spirit. Every Christian is indwelt by the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit will guide and direct us. Are you open to being led by the Holy Spirit even in the area of giving? There is nothing like life in the Spirit. There is nothing like the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).
