August 3 is our VBS in which we will discover the mysteries of the parables. Like a good detective we need to study them carefully so we can get insight in living the Christian life. Do you have eyes to see? Do you have ears to hear? Don’t we look but don’t really see? Don’t we often hear but don’t hear. Listening is an art. We need to pray for God to open our eyes and ears. “Lord, speak to me. Teach me your ways. I want to know you more and I want to serve you. Please help me.” Ask the Holy Spirit speak to you.
Jesus told these stories to provoke thought and to move people to action. There is a go in gospel. Yes, being precedes doing, but over and over again Jesus taught so that people’s lives would be transformed. Usually transformation does not happen until you do what God tells you to do. Often Jesus’ parables are about the kingdom of God. The kingdom of God is the place where God reigns or rules. Does God reign or rule in your life? How are you like God and how are you unlike God? God is holy. Are you? God is love? Are you loving? What I am trying to do as I write, teach and preach is to plant seeds that I am hoping with God’s help will grow. In VBS I am teaching the parable of the sower, the seed and the soils. Let it grow!
