The Message of Advent

The Message of Advent

Now more than ever we need to celebrate Advent, the coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus the Christ (Messiah).   Times are hard.   Times were hard when Jesus was born in a very divided world.   There were a lots of haters in Israel because Israel was controlled by Rome.   Some were even ready to kill their enemies.   We need the message of Advent as we light the Advent candles:  Jesus is our only hope.   Only in Jesus is there true peace.   Joy in Jesus is possible even in the midst of suffering because we are putting our trust in Jesus alone.   The last Sunday of Advent we focus on the love that is possible because we are connected to Jesus.  Can you say right now, “I need Jesus?”

We love to read the accounts of the birth of Jesus in Matthew 1 and Luke 1-2.  But what about the gospel of John?  Even though we do not read a birth narrative, John’s gospel tells us who Jesus really is and why He came into this world.  “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”  Who is the Word?   It is Jesus.  John 1:14, “The Word became flesh (a human being) and made his dwelling among us.  We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”  Jesus is God.  Jesus came to earth on a rescue mission with the means of rescue being the cross, where Jesus the perfect Lamb of God, died for us.   In John’s gospel it is written that Jesus said, “It is finished (John 19:30)” which literally means:  PAID IN FULL.  Will you say right now, “I need Jesus?”
